Noms de famille coréens et bon-gwan
A surname is not the whole lineage
Korean surnames are shared by many unrelated or differently traced family groups. Bon-gwan is a lineage-place designation that can distinguish groups using the same surname.
Read records in their context
Genealogical traditions, historical records, and family accounts differ in scope and reliability. A single online family tree should not be treated as proof of a broad historical claim. When accuracy matters, consult archival or scholarly reference material.
Check the identifying details
For family-history research, record the Hangeul and Hanja spelling, bon-gwan, person, date, and document that supports a claim. A matching Roman spelling alone is weak evidence because several Korean spellings can appear alike in Latin letters.
What this does not mean
A surname or bon-gwan does not establish a person's personality, social value, or compatibility with another person. It is a cultural and historical way of describing lineage.
