The Generation Name System (Dolimja) in Korean Families

What is Dolimja?

Dolimja, or "generation names," is a unique Confucian naming custom where siblings, cousins, and relatives of the same generation share a common Chinese character in their names. This system allows relatives to immediately identify their relative position within the family tree, even if they have never met before.

The Mathematical Five-Element Cycle

The generation character is not chosen randomly. Most traditional Korean clans use a rotational sequence based on the Five Elements (Wood ➡️ Fire ➡️ Earth ➡️ Metal ➡️ Water). Each generation shifts to the next element in the cycle.

- If the father's generation used a Hanja containing the "Water" element, the son's generation will use a character with "Wood" (since Water feeds Wood).

- The grandson's generation will then use a character containing "Fire" (since Wood fuels Fire).

Maintaining Unity and Identity

For centuries, Dolimja was a pillar of clan solidarity. It reinforced a sense of duty and shared destiny among extended family members. Even in the modern era, many families still cherish this system, considering it a valuable link to their roots and ancestors.

Modern Adaptations

While strict adherence has decreased in highly modernized families, many parents still choose to keep one character of the generation name or adapt it into a modern, easy-to-pronounce Hanja. It serves as a beautiful compromise between honoring heritage and expressing personal identity.
