Start with purpose, not a promised outcome

A Korean name can be a personal, family, artistic, or study-related choice. It does not determine personality, health, relationships, or future success. Start by deciding where and how the name will be used.

Check the word itself

For a native Korean word, look up its attested meaning and pronunciation in the National Institute of Korean Language dictionary. For a Hanja name, identify the exact character as well as its Korean reading; the same reading can correspond to different characters.

Say it in context

Try the name with a surname and common forms of address. Ask a fluent Korean speaker whether it is easy to hear, pronounce, and use politely in the setting you have in mind. A name can sound appealing in isolation but feel awkward in a full introduction.

Keep a record of the exact spelling

Write down the Hangeul spelling, any Hanja used, and the chosen Roman spelling. Romanization is a convention for representing Korean sounds; it is not a replacement for the original Hangeul spelling.
